Robotic FUE Hair Restoration

Robotic Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

Robotic Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a method of hair transplantation where hair is harvested through small circular incisions from the donor zone leaving tiny, round, white scars (rather than the linear scar of an FUT procedure). FUE was first described in the medical literature by Drs. Rassman and Bernstein in 2002. In Robotic FUE, Drs. Shaver and Bernstein use the ARTAS® iX Robotic System to automate the key step in the FUE process, follicular unit graft harvesting. Automating this step enables surgeons to perform FUE with unparalleled precision and consistency.

Advantages

The main advantages of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) are not leaving a linear donor scar and having a faster healing time. When the patient’s primary goal is to be able to wear their hair very short or return quickly to strenuous activity, FUE is ideal. FUE is also indicated when there is an increased risk of a widened scar or when scalp laxity (looseness) does not permit a strip excision. The patient may sometimes choose FUE simply to avoid the stigma of a linear donor scar even though it would be easily covered by their hair.

Robotic Follicular Unit Extraction FUE hair transplant procedures were pioneered by Dr. Bernstein in 2011 and Bernstein Medical was among the first facilities in the world to use the ARTAS robot to perform FUE, and the first to use the new ARTAS iX system. Today, every FUE procedure at Bernstein Medical uses the ARTAS iX system. As a medical adviser to Restoration Robotics, Dr. Bernstein collaborates with the robot’s engineers and developers to improve its hardware and software systems. Bernstein Medical is a beta-test site for this innovative technology and numerous advances were developed and tested at our facility.

About Schweiger Dermatology Group

Schweiger Dermatology Group was founded to help make excellent dermatology care accessible throughout the Northeast. In 2010, Dr. Eric Schweiger started the practice with a single location in Midtown Manhattan. When he saw the need for high-quality dermatology care that did not require weeks or months of waiting to see a qualified provider, his vision of a multi-location practice was born.
