And while it’s no secret cold weather is basically synonymous with chapped lips, you may be surprised to learn your go-to lip balm could be doing more harm than good.

Aside from simply being painful, dry and chapped lips can make wearing any type of lipstick or stain nearly impossible, something beauty lovers have no time for. So what makes a lip balm actually effective? According to the experts, it all depends on the ingredients.

Dr. Rachel Nazarian, of Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City, shared with HuffPost that lip balms with added fragrances can cause lips to become irritated which leads to more chapping.
