The Most Common Spring Skin Allergies

Spring is in the air—and on the skin.

Here are the most common skin allergies  in the spring and summer to watch out for:

If you’re having cocktails al fresco…

“Contact with lime/lemon juice or celery prior to sun exposure can cause a skin allergy known as a phytophotodermatitis. A classic example of this is commonly known as ‘beer drinker’s dermatitis,’ which occurs in those squeezing lime juice for their Coronas, margaritas or other drinks and then being exposed to the UV rays from the sun.â€

If you’re slathering on the sunscreen…

You can react to fragrances and preservatives in sunscreens. “The most common of which are oxybenzone and padimate O, and less commonly avobenzone. Those who have had skin reactions to these ingredients should avoid sunscreens that contain them.â€

If you’re wearing a new pair of jeans…

Nickel is one of the most common allergens worldwide. “Nickel is a strong silver based metal that is commonly used in jewelry, buckles, and snaps. Those allergic to nickel often present with a rash on the stomach where their belt buckle or the snap from their jeans rests on the body.â€

About Schweiger Dermatology Group

Schweiger Dermatology Group was founded to help make excellent dermatology care accessible throughout the Northeast. In 2010, Dr. Eric Schweiger started the practice with a single location in Midtown Manhattan. When he saw the need for high-quality dermatology care that did not require weeks or months of waiting to see a qualified provider, his vision of a multi-location practice was born.
