Hand Veins
Do prominent hand veins make your hands look older than you feel? As we age, skin loses volume and elasticity, making veins more noticeable. While typically harmless, these visible veins can affect your confidence. At Schweiger Dermatology Group, we offer advanced, non-invasive treatments to reduce the appearance of hand veins—helping you achieve smoother, more youthful-looking hands with natural-looking results.
What Are Hand Veins?
Hand veins are dilated blood vessels that become visible beneath the skin, often appearing as blue or purple lines. As we age, the skin on the hands becomes thinner, making veins more prominent. While these veins are typically not harmful, they can become more noticeable over time, especially with factors like aging, weight loss, and sun exposure. Many individuals seek treatment to minimize the visibility of these veins for a more rejuvenated hand appearance.
Why Do Hand Veins Occur?
Hand veins can develop for a variety of reasons, and their visibility may increase as we age. Common factors include:
- Aging: Thinning skin and the loss of fat on the hands can cause veins to become more noticeable.
- Sun Exposure: Prolonged exposure to the sun can damage the skin and blood vessels, making veins more prominent.
- Weight Loss: Significant weight loss or changes in body composition can lead to the visibility of veins in the hands.
- Genetics: Some people inherit a tendency to have more visible veins, especially in the hands.
While hand veins are usually not a health concern, they may cause cosmetic discomfort or affect one’s confidence, especially in social or professional settings.
How Are Hand Veins Diagnosed?
Diagnosing hand veins begins with a detailed consultation to understand your medical history and lifestyle factors. Our specialists will perform examination to assess the size, location, and appearance of the veins. In rare cases, additional tests may be needed to ensure there are no underlying health concerns.
- Consultation: A discussion of your health history and lifestyle habits.
- Examination: A careful examination of the hands to evaluate vein prominence.
- Additional Testing: If needed, an ultrasound may be used to examine vein function and blood flow in the hands.
Hand Vein Treatments
At Schweiger Dermatology Group, we offer advanced treatments to minimize the appearance of hand veins. We utilize the latest technology to provide non-invasive options that require minimal downtime, ensuring effective results.
Sclerotherapy for Hand Veins
For smaller hand veins, sclerotherapy may be recommended. During this procedure, a medication is injected into the veins, causing it to collapse and eventually fade away. Sclerotherapy has been proven to be highly effective. The procedure is minimally invasive and generally results in minimal downtime but will take longer than microsurgery to see the final results. Only one hand at a time is treated as you will have a wrap on your hand for 48 hours after the procedure.
Microsurgery for Hand Veins
For larger hand veins, microsurgery with sclerotherapy is recommended. During this procedure, a combination of injecting the veins followed by removing the veins is used. The incisions are the size of a freckle and heal very quickly. The procedure is performed using local anesthesia so your can drive yourself home. Only one hand at a time is treated due to the dressing on your hand after the procedure.
What Results Will I See?
Results from hand vein treatments vary depending on the severity and type of treatment used. With sclerotherapy, it can take several weeks for the full effect to become visible, as the treated veins are gradually absorbed by the body. Many patients report improved skin appearance and a more youthful hand look after completing their treatment. After microsurgery you’ll see results faster although the incisions take several weeks to completely heal.
While results are long-lasting, it’s essential to follow post-treatment instructions to achieve the best outcome and prevent new veins from forming.
