What Is Varithena® Vein Treatment?
Varithena® is an advanced, non-surgical treatment for varicose veins in the legs. It involves injecting a specialized microfoam into the affected veins, causing them to collapse and be reabsorbed by the body. This process reroutes blood flow to healthier veins, improving circulation and reducing swelling, discomfort, and visibility of varicose veins.
Unlike traditional vein-stripping surgeries, Varithena® is quick, requires no incisions, and offers a quick recovery.
Who Can Benefit From Varithena®?
Varithena® is an excellent treatment option for individuals suffering from symptoms associated with varicose veins, including:
- Aching or throbbing
- Tiredness or heaviness in the legs
- Swelling or rashes or skin discoloration
- Cramps or restless legs
- Burning or itching around the veins
- Visible, bulging veins
- Leg ulcers or skin changes
How the Varithena® Procedure for Veins Works
The Varithena® vein treatment procedure is performed in-office at Schweiger Dermatology Group and typically takes less than an hour. Here’s what you can expect.
- Consultation & Evaluation: Our vein specialists assess your condition and discuss your symptoms to create a personalized treatment plan. This consultation ensures that Varithena® is the best treatment option for your unique needs.
- Leg Vein Ultrasound: A complete ultrasound of your veins will be performed to determine the source of the vein problem so that the veins can be treated accurately
Insurance Authorization will be obtained to be sure that it is covered by your medical insurance company. This can take up to two weeks in some situations. - The Day of the Procedure: The treatment area is cleansed. Then using an ultrasound to locate the problem vein, Varithena is injected into that vein using a small IV. The medication seals the vein shut and reroutes the blood to normal veins. Your leg will be wrapped in a tight compression dressing that stays on for 48 hours and then you’ll wear a compression hose for two weeks.
- Post-Treatment Care: Most patients can return to their daily activities immediately following the procedure, making it a convenient and effective treatment option. You’ll have a followup visit with an ultrasound in weeks after the procedure to be sure that the treatment has worked fully.

What to Expect After Treatment
After undergoing Varithena® vein treatment, you may experience some mild swelling or bruising at the treatment site. These side effects are normal and typically resolve within a few weeks. Walking and light activity are encouraged following the procedure to promote circulation and support healing.
One of the most significant benefits of Varithena® is that many patients notice fast immediate relief from symptoms such as pain, swelling, and fatigue. As the treated veins are absorbed by the body over time, the appearance of your legs will gradually improve. The result is a noticeable reduction in the visible appearance of varicose veins and a more comfortable leg experience.
