Dysport® Injections for Fine Lines and Wrinkles

At Schweiger Dermatology Group, our board-certified dermatologists and dermatology providers offer Dysport® injections to smooth expression lines and refresh your appearance while keeping your face looking like you. Dysport® is one of several neuromodulators available in our cosmetic dermatology practice, and our providers will help you decide whether it is the right fit for your goals.

Dysport® is an FDA-approved injectable that temporarily relaxes the facial muscles behind dynamic wrinkles, including forehead lines and frown lines between the eyebrows. By easing those muscle movements, Dysport® softens the lines they create and can help slow new ones from forming.

What Is Dysport®?

Dysport® is a form of botulinum toxin type A, the same active ingredient found in Botox® and other neuromodulators. When injected into a targeted muscle, it temporarily blocks the nerve signals that cause that muscle to contract. As the muscle relaxes, the skin above it creases less, leaving a smoother, more rested look.

What sets Dysport® apart is its formulation. It is slightly more diluted than some other neuromodulators and tends to spread more readily once injected. Many providers find this spreading quality useful for treating broader areas, where a smooth, even result across a larger surface is the goal.

Dysport® Injection Areas: Where Can Dysport® Be Injected?

Our providers use Dysport® to relax the muscles behind dynamic wrinkles across several areas of the face. Common Dysport® injection areas include:

  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines)
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Bunny lines along the bridge of the nose
  • The lip area, where a small amount can create a subtle lip flip or soften fine vertical lip lines
  • Other expression lines across wider areas of the face

Because Dysport® spreads more easily than some other neuromodulators, it is often a strong option for the forehead and other larger regions, where its diffusion can help create a soft, even finish. For more delicate spots like the lips, your provider uses smaller, carefully placed amounts.

It helps to know what Dysport® does and does not do. As a neuromodulator, Dysport® relaxes muscles rather than adding volume, so for fuller lips or to fill deeper folds, many patients consider dermal fillers instead. During your consultation, your dermatologist or dermatology provider will map the specific areas that will give you the most natural result.

How Does Dysport® Work?

A Dysport® treatment is quick, usually taking about 10 to 20 minutes, and uses very fine needles, so most patients feel only a brief pinch. There is little to no downtime, and most people return to their normal routine the same day.

Results follow a familiar timeline, and some patients notice Dysport® taking effect a little sooner than other neuromodulators:

  • Initial softening often begins within two to three days
  • Full results are typically visible within about two weeks
  • Results usually last about three to four months

Ongoing treatments help maintain your results over time. As with any injectable, the look you achieve depends heavily on the skill and experience of your injector, which is why our providers focus on placement that preserves your natural expression. You can read more about why natural-looking injectables have become the standard our providers aim for.

Dysport® vs. Botox®: What’s the Difference?

Dysport® and Botox® are both FDA-approved neuromodulators made from botulinum toxin type A, and they treat many of the same expression lines. The differences come down to formulation and behavior:

  • Spread: Dysport® is more diluted and spreads more easily, which can suit larger areas like the forehead. Botox® is more concentrated and stays more localized, which can suit precise, targeted spots.
  • Onset: Some patients notice Dysport® working slightly faster, though full results for both take roughly two weeks.
  • Longevity: Results for both typically last about three to four months and are broadly comparable.

Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on your facial anatomy, the area being treated, and how your muscles respond. Our providers can also walk you through other options on our overview of Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau for fine lines and wrinkles, or you can compare directly with Botox treatment.

What to Expect During a Dysport® Treatment

Before treatment, you will meet with a dermatologist or dermatology provider for a personalized consultation. Your provider will review your medical history, current medications and supplements, any muscle or nerve conditions, previous cosmetic treatments, and your goals for the treatment. Please let your provider know if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding, and disclose any botulinum toxin treatment you have had within the past four months.

After assessing your facial movement and anatomy, your provider will recommend a customized plan and explain what results to expect. The injections themselves take only a few minutes, and a topical numbing cream can be applied first if you would like.

Dysport® Results and Aftercare

Most patients tolerate Dysport® very well and resume normal activities right away. We generally recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for the rest of the day, and any minor swelling at the injection sites usually settles within a couple of hours. Applying a cool pack briefly can help with any local swelling.

Your provider will share simple aftercare guidance based on the areas treated, such as staying upright for a few hours and avoiding rubbing the treated areas, so your results settle evenly.

Is Dysport® Safe? Side Effects to Know

When administered by qualified dermatology providers, Dysport® is considered very safe. Side effects are usually mild and temporary, and may include:

  • Minor redness or swelling at the injection site
  • Temporary bruising
  • A mild headache

More noticeable effects are uncommon and resolve on their own. Serious complications are rare when treatment is performed by trained medical providers, which is why choosing an experienced injector matters.

How long does Dysport® last?

Results typically last about three to four months, depending on the area treated and your muscle activity.

Is Dysport® the same as Botox®?

Both are made from botulinum toxin type A and treat similar expression lines. Dysport® is more diluted and spreads more easily, while Botox® is more concentrated and stays more localized. Your provider will recommend the better option for you.

Are Dysport® injections painful?

Most patients describe the injections as a brief pinch. A topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand for added comfort.

Is there downtime after Dysport®?

There is little to no downtime. Most patients return to normal activities the same day, though we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise until the following day.

Where can Dysport® be injected?

Dysport® is commonly injected into the forehead, the frown lines between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, bunny lines on the nose, and the lip area. Because it spreads more readily, it is often used for larger areas like the forehead.

Can Dysport® be used on the lips?

Yes, in small amounts Dysport® can create a subtle lip flip or soften fine vertical lip lines. It relaxes muscles rather than adding volume, so for fuller lips many patients choose dermal fillers instead.

How often should I get Dysport®?

Most patients schedule treatments every three to four months to maintain results. We recommend waiting at least 90 days between treatments.

Can Dysport® be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Dysport® is often paired with dermal fillers or other cosmetic procedures for a more balanced, comprehensive result.
