Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau® for Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau® for fine lines and wrinkles are injectable neuromodulators. Neuromodulators are purified proteins produced from the Clostridium Botulinum bacteria. They act to relax the muscles that produce dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are those wrinkles caused by the activity of the facial muscles (e.g., frowning, squinting, smiling, and raising eyebrows). For patients who are new to injectable treatments, it can be helpful to understand what to expect from Botox for the first time.
How Neuromodulators Work
Neuromodulators, like Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®, are FDA-approved and work to weaken or paralyze various muscles of the face temporarily to minimize or reverse wrinkle formation.
While they all have the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin, they differ in their formulation and dosage, how much the product spreads, and how quickly you can see results.
Neuromodulators are used to soften fine lines formed from the movement of muscles in the face and neck areas. When the neuromodulator is injected, it relaxes the underlying muscles where the fine lines or wrinkles appear. Once the muscle is relaxed, it gradually smooths out the appearance of the overlying skin. Patients often compare different injectable options and may find it helpful to read about fillers versus Botox before deciding which treatment is right for them.
Recommended Use of Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®
Generally, neuromodulators are used to:
- Correct aging skin
- Reduce the appearance of crow’s feet
- Resolve problems of excessive sweating
- Reduce frown lines and forehead furrows
- Minimize sagging skin
- Reduce the appearance of wrinkles
Botox® is the most commonly known neuromodulator. Many patients also choose to begin treatments earlier as part of a preventative Botox routine to slow the formation of fine lines over time.
Botox® and Dysport®
Botox® and Dysport® are botulinum toxin treatments that minimize or reverse wrinkle formation. These treatments temporarily weaken or paralyze various muscles of the face. They act to relax the muscles that produce dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are those wrinkles caused by the activity of the facial muscles (e.g., frowning, squinting, smiling, and raising eyebrows). Patients often prefer these treatments because they can provide subtle, refreshed results, especially when using natural-looking injectables.
Botox® Has Many Uses
Botox® has many uses beyond cosmetics, providing anti-aging benefits. It is a unique injectable that can also relieve certain medical conditions.
Botox® for Excessive Sweating
Botox® for excessive sweating is a relatively easy and quick treatment, and most patients report being very satisfied. This popular anti-wrinkle treatment is FDA-approved for excessive sweating.
How It Works
Botox® is injected directly into the skin of the problem area and can take several weeks to take full effect, lasting from 4 to 14 months. The injections are incredibly effective at completely shutting down the sweat production in problem areas such as the underarms, the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, the groin, and the scalp. These injections prevent the release of the neurotransmitters that signal the sweat glands to activate.
