Botox® Has Many Uses

At Schweiger Dermatology Group, our board-certified dermatologists and dermatology providers use Botox® for far more than forehead wrinkles. Botox® treats a wide range of cosmetic concerns across the face, and it has well-established medical uses too. This page is your guide to the many uses of Botox®, with a quick overview of each treatment area and where to learn more.

Botox

Botox® is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A that temporarily relaxes targeted muscles. By easing the muscle movement behind a line, a clenched jaw, or an overactive sweat gland, Botox® injections can smooth, soften, slim, and relieve, depending on where they are placed. The right plan depends on your anatomy and goals, which your provider will map out during a consultation.

Cosmetic Botox® Uses

Cosmetic Botox® works best on dynamic wrinkles, the lines created by repeated expressions, and on muscles that affect the shape and balance of the face.

Botox® for Forehead Lines

Forehead lines are one of the most requested Botox® areas. Botox® relaxes the muscle that lifts the brows, softening the horizontal lines that deepen with age while still allowing natural movement. Used consistently, it can also help slow new lines from forming, which is why many patients ask about preventative Botox and what age to start Botox.

Botox® for Frown Lines (the “11 Lines”)

Frown lines, also called glabellar lines or the “11 lines,” form between the eyebrows from squinting and concentrating. Botox® relaxes these muscles to smooth the vertical creases and soften a tense or angry-looking expression.

Botox® for Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet are the fine lines that fan out from the corners of the eyes when you smile or squint. Botox® is FDA-approved for this area and softens these lines while keeping your smile looking natural.

Botox® Brow Lift

A Botox® brow lift relaxes the muscles that pull the brows down, allowing them to sit slightly higher for a more open, refreshed look. It is a non-surgical option for patients who want subtle lift around the eyes. Botox® is sometimes used cautiously under the eyes as well, though our providers assess each patient carefully, since this area is more delicate.

Botox® Lip Flip

A Botox® lip flip uses a small amount of product to relax the muscle along the upper lip so it rolls slightly outward, creating the look of a fuller lip without adding volume. Botox® can also soften fine vertical lip lines. If you want actual added fullness, dermal fillers are the better option, and the two are sometimes combined.

Botox® for a Gummy Smile

When a smile shows a lot of upper gum, Botox® can relax the muscle that raises the upper lip, lowering it slightly for a more balanced smile.

Botox® for the Chin

Botox® can smooth a dimpled or “pebbled” chin by relaxing the mentalis muscle, giving the lower face a smoother appearance.

Masseter Botox® for Jaw Slimming

Botox® placed in the masseter, the large muscle at the angle of the jaw, can slim a square or wide jawline over time as the muscle relaxes. Many patients choose masseter Botox® for a softer facial contour, and it often helps with jaw tension at the same time.

Botox® for Neck Bands (Nefertiti Lift)

Botox® can soften the vertical platysmal bands of the neck and is sometimes used in a technique known as a Nefertiti lift to refine the jawline and upper neck in select patients.

Medical and Functional Uses of Botox®

Botox® is not only cosmetic. The same muscle and nerve-calming action treats several medical concerns.

Botox® for Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

Botox® is FDA-approved for excessive sweating and is highly effective for problem areas such as the underarms, palms, and soles. The injections block the signals that activate sweat glands, reducing sweat in the treated area for months at a time. You can also learn more about our broader approach to hyperhidrosis treatment.

Botox® for Jaw Clenching and Teeth Grinding (TMJ)

The same masseter injections used for jaw slimming can ease the muscle tension behind clenching, teeth grinding, and TMJ-related discomfort. As the muscle relaxes, many patients notice less jaw soreness and fewer tension headaches.

Other Medical Uses

Botox® is FDA-approved for additional conditions, including chronic migraine, which is typically managed in coordination with a neurologist rather than a dermatology provider. During your visit, your dermatologist or dermatology provider can help you understand which uses of Botox® fit your needs and refer you appropriately when another specialist is the right fit.

Botox® for Men

Cosmetic treatments for men have grown quickly, and Botox® is one of the most requested. Many men choose Botox® to soften forehead lines and frown lines for a refreshed, natural look that still moves normally. Our providers tailor placement and dosing to maintain a strong, masculine appearance.

What to Expect From Botox®

Most Botox® treatments take about 10 to 20 minutes with little to no downtime. Initial results appear within a few days, full results show in about 7 to 14 days, and results typically last three to four months. Botox® is often combined with other treatments for a complete plan, such as a Botox and filler treatment, and your provider can also compare it with other neuromodulators like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau.
