As you’re slathering your dry, cracked skin in tons of moisturizer this fall and winter, don’t forget to give your cuticles extra love, too. You know, that finicky layer of skin located right at the border of your nail bed.

Constantly washing your hands (particularly with hot water), using hand sanitizer often, certain skin conditions (like eczema or psoriasis), never giving your nails a break from polish, biting your nails and the skin around them, and even nutritional gaps can cause brittle nails and cracked cuticles, says Michelle Farber, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in Philadelphia.

“Treating your hands harshly—like repeated wetting or any jobs that where your hands are in water a bit more—can often contribute to the cuticle cracking as well,” Dr. Farber explains.

About Schweiger Dermatology Group

Schweiger Dermatology Group was founded to help make excellent dermatology care accessible throughout the Northeast. In 2010, Dr. Eric Schweiger started the practice with a single location in Midtown Manhattan. When he saw the need for high-quality dermatology care that did not require weeks or months of waiting to see a qualified provider, his vision of a multi-location practice was born.
