The 10-minute tanning rule
Sun exposure is like a double-edged sword: It provides vitamin D, which is essential for bone health and fitness performance. At the same time, it leads to premature aging and the potential of developing skin cancer. Set a daily limit, though, and you can get the benefits with minimal risk.
The sun is the most natural vitamin D source, says Jason Miller, MD, a dermatologist at the Schweiger Dermatology Group in Freehold, New Jersey. Because as few as 20 daily minutes of exposure can cause wrinkles, sun spots, and increased risks of certain skin cancers, most derms and doctors suggest getting the nutrient from supplements, he explains.
