Cleansing is a crucial step in even the most basic skin-care routine. Just like your hair or the rest of your body, in order to keep your skin looking and feeling its best, you’ve got to keep it clean. And, of course, you want to make sure your complexion is as clean as possible before you layer on your serum, moisturizer, etc., and hit the hay.

If you’ve been on the social media beauty scene recently you may have caught wind of the triple cleansing trend. Double cleansing is a tried-and-true method, but could adding an extra step offer even more benefits? Or could it veer into harmful territory? We asked dermatologists to help set the record straight on triple cleansing.

“For those who work in very hot or dirty environments, and for those who apply a lot of makeup on a day-to-day basis, multiple-step cleansing can be helpful to remove excess residue on the skin,” says Tara Rao, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City.
