Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a surgical procedure, developed by Drs. Bernstein and Rassman in 1995, where hair is transplanted from the permanent zone on the back and sides of the scalp to areas of hair loss on the frontal scalp, top and crown. This essence of FUT is to use naturally occurring groups of 1, 2, 3, or 4 hairs (called follicular units) to produce the best possible cosmetic result.

After the patient’s scalp is anesthetized, the doctor removes a thin strip of donor tissue from an area within the permanent zone. Once harvested, the donor strip is cut into many individual follicular units using stereo-microscopic dissection techniques. As these follicular units are being prepared, the doctor makes tiny holes in the scalp, called recipient sites, where the hair grafts are then placed.

The quality of the stereo-microscopic dissection is an important factor in determining how well grafts will grow. The distribution and positioning of the follicular unit grafts determine the aesthetic qualities of a hair transplant, and so this must be decided on a case-by-case basis, depending on the patient’s needs, his history of hair loss and the likelihood of future balding. When performed by an expert surgeon, the results look completely natural and thus indistinguishable from one’s original hair.

Advantages

The main advantage of Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT/Strip) is that it typically (but not always) gives the highest yield of hair. When a patient’s primary goal is to achieve maximum fullness from the hair restoration, FUT should be considered. There are many reasons for this, including the precision of stereo-microscopic dissection and the ability to efficiently harvest from a more select area of the donor zone.
