Prejuvenation: Turning the Tables on Aging

A new age of consciousness about aging is taking place. Our appearance doesn’t have to hint at our age anymore, thanks to a movement called “prejuvenation,” the practice of caring for your skin before the signs of aging appear.

Dr. Brian Hibler
Dr. Brian Hibler, a board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City, notes that prejuvenation is a “proactive approach to focusing on prevention rather than correction.”
Follow his guidance for adopting a prejuvenation skincare routine so you can embrace your skin at all ages.

Tips for success

Start early, rather than waiting for wrinkles and sagging to appear. Dr. Hibler advises implementing a routine as early as your 20s and 30s. No problem if you’ve missed that window. Caring for your skin at any stage of life is going to have positive impacts on your complexion and diminish the telltale signs of time.

An important element when exploring ways to prejuvenate your skin is to devise a routine you can stick to both in the morning and evening. “An effective topical regimen should at minimum include facial sunscreen and antioxidants in the morning, and a topical retinoid and moisturizer in the evening,” Dr. Hibler says. He also suggests looking for products that include antioxidants and nutrients such as vitamin C, niacinamide and vitamin E.

Remember, “there’s not one product that can do it all,” he says. “Use a combination of approaches,” such as skincare products that target your areas of concern and non-invasive cosmetic treatments.

Consider treatments from a dermatology provider

To accelerate results, add in-office cosmetic treatments that focus on facial rejuvenation. “One of the key drivers behind the rise of prejuvenation is the significant technological advancements in aesthetic dermatology, which have made various noninvasive treatment methods available … [allowing] aesthetic doctors to customize treatments according to the unique needs, concerns and expectations of each patient,” according to “Prejuvenation: The Global New Anti-Aging Trend,” published in the National Library of Medicine.

The following cosmetic dermatology treatments and procedures are non-invasive and have little downtime. Each one targets your skin in a different way and can work together as well. “When you mix and match cosmetic treatments, you’re targeting the different layers of the skin and different components that can lead to signs of aging.” Says Dr. Hibler. “Creating a diverse yet personalized treatment plan will keep a natural aesthetic without looking dramatically different or overdone.”

Here are some of the prejuvenation treatments Dr. Hilber recommends:

  • Botox is used to relax dynamic lines, caused by frowning, squinting and smiling. Identical twin studies demonstrate how repeated treatments can prevent the formation of these lines from becoming deeper or permanent.
  • Fillers are used to restore volume loss and lift tissue. Data shows these injections can stimulate collagen production to slow down signs of aging.
  • Lasers are chosen to rejuvenate the skin and treat signs of sun damage. Dr. Hibler notes research shows these treatments restore a more youthful skin barrier that is more resilient to UV damage, like broken blood vessels, brown spots and wrinkles, and can have a preventative effect on future risk of skin cancer. An added bonus is lasers that target blood vessels have been shown to produce collagen, improving tone and smoothness.
  • Tissue tightening to keep skin taut. “Think shrink-wrapping the skin,” says Dr. Hibler. This is non-invasive with no downtime or fillers. Instead, he says it’s natural collagen regeneration to keep the tissue lifted. When repeated over time, it can slow down signs of fine lines, wrinkles, laxity and tissue sagging.
  • Microneedling builds collagen and gives skin a glow. It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and is also used to treat acne scarring. “The goal of any treatment to improve acne scars is to build collagen,” he says. “These are the same treatments we do to prevent signs of aging, so when you get a laser treatment or microneedling for your acne scars, you are also effectively getting an anti-aging procedure at the same time.”

Enjoy the journey

The benefit of committing to a prejuvenation lifestyle is there will be fewer signs of aging to rejuvenate down the road. A trusted dermatology provider can help you create a daily skincare routine that’s right for your skin and help find the right cosmetic treatments to enhance a youthful appearance.
