Anti-Aging Skin Care Tips: How to “Prejuvenate” Your Skin

Do you know ways to “prejuvenate” your skin or pre-treat skin so it is young and supple for as long as possible?

Prejuventation is the latest catchphrase in dermatology circles. It is the practice of caring for your skin such that wrinkles, fine lines, and sun damage don’t appear on your face in the first place.

Regular use of sunscreen–at least SPF 30–every day is a well-known part of preventing wrinkles. Let us look at other preventative measures that help stop aging.

Here’s a look at the best anti-aging skin care tips and in-office treatments to prejuvenate your skin.

The Best Skin Care for Preventing Wrinkles

Besides the obvious and best skin care tip to wear sunscreen every day (rain or shine, summer, or winter!), sloughing off dead skin cells through exfoliation can help treat wrinkles before they appear on the skin. Exfoliating the skin can also jumpstart the skin’s renewal process.

I recommend exfoliation twice a week,” says Dr. Helen Flamenbaum of Schweiger Dermatology Group’s Long Island dermatology office in New Hyde Park. “Exfoliation is very important because it stimulates collagen and elastin, and it helps reveal healthier, younger-looking skin.”

Botox for Wrinkle Prevention

We know that repetitive facial movements will develop wrinkles,” explains Dr. Karen Hammerman.

We have procedures that don’t allow us to move our faces as much and create those wrinkles.” Dr. Hammerman recommends Botox®  and other wrinkle-relaxing injectables as a preventative measure to many of her patients.

She doesn’t advocate treating teenagers with Botox®, but she believes that as soon as any wrinkles bother you, there’s no reason to put off Botox®.

The idea is that even if someone has a wrinkle that’s not very deep if you can inject it with Botox and prevent it from forming an even deeper wrinkle; And prevent from having to treat later on with a more invasive procedure, why not do it earlier?” says Dr. Hammerman.

Lifestyle Tips for Preventing Wrinkles

Sleep plays a huge role in preventing wrinkles and making the skin look as young as possible for as long as possible. Getting at least seven hours of sleep every night will allow the skin to rejuvenate itself.

Sleep is also integral in lowering stress levels. When the body is stressed, it produces the hormone cortisol, which can break down collagen and elastin. This can lead to premature aging of the skin.

Another way to prevent wrinkles is with the use of antioxidants. Today, there’s a wide variety of topical skincare products containing antioxidants. However, adding them to your diet is another way to derive their benefits.

I’m a big fan of antioxidants, very colorful fruits, and vegetables,” says Dr. Flamenbaum. “They can help protect your skin from damage from the sun.”
