Anti-Aging Skin Care Tips: How to “Prejuvenate” Your Skin
Anti-Aging Skin Care Tips: It’s All About “Prejuvenation”
We all know about skin rejuvenation, but there’s a new catchphrase going around dermatology circles called “prejuvenation.” The idea is to pre-treat skin so wrinkles, fine lines and sun damage don’t appear on your face in the first place. While we all know that regular use of sunscreen–at least SPF 30–every day is a huge part of preventing wrinkles, there are other preventative measures that can be taken to help stop aging in its tracks. In addition to at-home anti-aging skin care tips, there are also in-office cosmetic dermatology treatments that will help keep those wrinkles from ever forming on your skin in the first place. Here, a look at the best anti-aging skin care tips and in-office treatment to prejuvenate your skin!
The Best Skin Care for Preventing Wrinkles
Besides the obvious and best skin care tip to wear sunscreen every day (rain or shine, summer or winter!), sloughing off dead skin cells can help treat wrinkles before they appear on the skin. Exfoliating the skin can also jumpstart the skin’s own renewal process. “I recommend exfoliation twice a week,” says Dr. Helen Flamenbaum of Schweiger Dermatology Group’s Long Island dermatology office in New Hyde Park. “Exfoliation is very important because it stimulates collagen and elastin and it helps reveal a healthier, younger looking skin.”
Botox for Wrinkle Prevention
“We know that repetitive facial movements will develop wrinkles,” explains Dr. Karen Hammerman, who sees patients in Schweiger Dermatology Group’s dermatology offices in Forest Hills and Elmhurst in Queens. “We have procedures that don’t allow us to move our faces as much and create those wrinkles.” As such, Dr. Hammerman recommends Botox as a preventative measure to many of her patients. Dr. Hammerman doesn’t advocate treating teenagers, but she does believe that as soon as a wrinkle starts to bother you, then there’s no reason to put off Botox. “The idea is that even if someone has a wrinkle that’s not very deep, if you can inject it with Botox and prevent it from forming an even deeper wrinkle and prevent from having to treat later on with a more invasive procedure, why not do it earlier?” says Dr. Hammerman.
Lifestyle Tips for Preventing Wrinkles
Sleep plays a huge role in preventing wrinkles and making the skin look as young as possible for as long as possible. You want to get at lease seven hours of sleep a night to allow for the skin to rejuvenate itself. Sleep is also integral in lowering stress levels. When the body is stressed, it produces the hormone cortisol, which can break down collagen and elastin, leading to premature aging of the skin. Another way to prevent wrinkles is with antioxidants. There’s no shortage of topical skincare products containing antioxidants, but another way to get them is by adding them into your diet. “I’m a big fan of antioxidants, very colorful fruits and vegetables,” says Dr. Flamenbaum. “They can help protect your skin from damage of the sun.”
What if You Still Need to Rejuvenate?
We’re lucky enough to have amazing skin rejuvenating treatments, such as Fraxel laser, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and chemical peels, which can help erase damage and correct the look of fine lines, wrinkles and sun damage. If you can prejuvenate with low-commitment treatments, such as Botox, you’ll protect your skin from forming wrinkles and will never have need for more invasive treatments, such as plastic surgery.
