New Year’s Resolutions for Your Skin
New Year’s resolutions are notoriously tough to keep. Even with the best intentions, studies show most are broken within four to six weeks. Whether it’s committing to a strict diet, hitting the gym every day or picking up a new skill, the initial enthusiasm can fade quickly.
This year, consider a skincare resolution. It’s attainable and can be transformative. Not only will it positively impact the way you look, but it can improve your overall health and well-being. Here’s are simple steps to create a routine that will stick.
Schedule an Annual Skin Check
Make sure to get an annual skin exam so your dermatology provider can identify and address any changes or trouble spots. Identifying potential skin cancer at an early stage is key as this is when it’s most treatable. Choose your date and establish a recurring appointment each year.
Use Sunscreen Every Day of the Year
Using a broad-spectrum 30+ SPF sunscreen — and reapplying it every two hours when outdoors — will minimize the harmful effects of UVB and UVA rays, which cause skin cancer. There are many types of sunscreens, from mineral to chemical; find one that feels so good on your skin you want to wear it every day.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Your skin craves moisture to promote elasticity, plumpness and overall health. Water bottles that track your daily progress, herbal teas and electrolyte powders can make it easier to meet your goal. Also give your skin hydration by using a daily moisturizer. And consider one that does double duty as sun protection. “Some daily moisturizers now include zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as these ingredients are well known to help stop or even reverse some signs of aging,” says Dr. Karen Hammerman, a board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in an article on cheap tricks for beautiful skin.
Freshen Up Your Product Selection
There’s a limit to how long skincare products last. Take an inventory of your products. Are any dried out, expired or never used? Start fresh and go simple. Work with your dermatology provider to create a streamlined routine that is straightforward and matches your lifestyle. Once it’s a habit, you can add other products to deepen your impact.
Explore Cosmetic Treatments
There are a range of non-invasive treatments that can help rejuvenate your skin, address acne and scarring, relax lines, restore volume and build collagen. Individual treatments can be used as a complement to your at-home methods or to address problem areas. Ask a cosmetic dermatology provider to explain the benefits of methods like laser and light therapy, chemical peels and microneedling.
Eat Well, Exercise, Sleep
These three are central to good health. When it comes to your skin health, refrain from dairy and high glycemic foods if you suffer from acne. Move every day and try not to push off bedtime. Getting 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep a night is ideal. “While you’re getting your Zs, your skin rebuilds collagen so it will be smoother and tighter if you’re getting sleep. Also, your blood flow gives your skin a boost while you sleep, which will make you the proud owner of healthy, glowing skin in the morning,” says Dr. Hammerman.
Create a Routine and Repeat
A simple routine you can stick to both morning and evening is the goal. “An effective topical regimen should at minimum include facial sunscreen and antioxidants in the morning, and a topical retinoid and moisturizer in the evening,” says Dr. Brian Hibler, a board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York. He also suggests looking for products that include antioxidants and nutrients such as vitamin C, niacinamide and vitamin E. Before hitting the sack, clean your face with a gentle cleanser followed by a moisturizer and any other product that may supercharge your skin during the night.
